SOUTH DEERFIELD — A water main break on Eastern Avenue affected water pressure and quality in the neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.
South Deerfield Water Supply District Superintendent Daniel Dion said the Police Department called the district at 3:17 p.m. about a water main break in front of 64 Eastern Ave., with residents reporting low water pressure. Dion noted his staff have not determined a cause beyond it being a joint failure.
“We responded at 3:30,” Dion said Wednesday afternoon. “I think it was just old pipes in the ground; it was actually a joint that failed.”
Dion said the surrounding neighborhood, along with Graves Street, Crestview Drive and parts of Sugarloaf Street, were reporting low pressure and dirty water.
Water district crews were on scene for most of the night. Dion said the repair took so long because of the “nature of where it was located and how wet it was.”
“We restored water around 2 a.m. and then were there for another hour after that, backfilling and cleaning,” Dion explained Wednesday.
Dion said the joint has been replaced and the district is continuing to monitor the area, as it is still in the process of replacing the water main on the street, which is slated to be completed in the spring.
