After a true pitcher’s duel at MacKenzie Stadium on Friday night, the Valley Blue Sox have won their first game of the 2023 NECBL season, beating the Ocean State Waves 1-0.
The team improved to 1-2 on the young season.
There were 10 hits in the game, only amounting to one run total. The lone run of the ballgame came from an RBI single off the bat of Matthew Bergevin in the bottom of the third inning. The team had eight hits on the night, along with five walks.
On the pitching side, the staff was dominant for the Blue Sox. Starter Sean Scanlon, Brendan Yagesh, and Michael Weidinger combined for 12 strikeouts.
Scanlon started the game for the Blue Sox, and threw four innings while allowing no hits. The ball was then turned over to the left hander Yagesh, who shut down the Waves out of the bullpen. The Mt. St. Mary’s pitcher threw three shutout innings out of the bullpen, striking out seven batters. Weidinger slammed the door out of the bullpen, pitching two innings with four strikeouts, earning himself a six out save.
The Blue Sox will hope to build off of their first win of the 2023 season, with their next game Saturday at 6:35 p.m against the North Shore Navigators at MacKenzie Stadium.
