Updated 'right to repair' measure among proposed ballot questions

BOSTON — Voters in Massachusetts may again be asked to weigh in on state rules concerning auto maintenance and repairs.

The group known as the Right to Repair coalition says it will file a proposed ballot question on Tuesday. Supporters of the initiative petition say it would “update” a state law that requires car manufacturers to share diagnostic and repair information with vehicle owners and independent repair shops.

Voters overwhelmingly approved that law in 2012 after an expensive ballot campaign. The coalition says it needs to be revised to account for wireless technologies.

Wednesday is the deadline for sponsors to submit proposed 2020 ballot questions to the state attorney general for certification.

Another petition filed in advance of the deadline would crackdown on gun owners who fail to properly secure their firearms.
