Matt McCall and the UMass basketball program will part ways after the season, UMass officials confirmed Tuesday.

He will still coach Wednesday’s 7 p.m. home game against Fordham and will lead the program until the Minutemen’s season ends following the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament.

“I want to thank Matt for his five years of service to UMass and our basketball program,” UMass Athletic Director Ryan Bamford said in a release. “Matt poured himself in to this role and has been a great teammate and partner as we worked to build a championship program. Unfortunately, we have not met the results we desire on the court and I believe a change at the end of the season is in the best interest of the program. I am grateful that Matt and I shared a mutual desire to have him finish the 2021-2022 campaign with the men in our program over the coming weeks.”

There is one year remaining on McCall’s contract, which he signed as an extension in 2018. If he’s terminated before March 31 he’s owed 50 percent of what remains of his $750,000 salary for this season and half of his $850,000 salary for next season.

After April 1 the buyout drops to just $425,000 (half of his salary for next year).

McCall is 58-81 at UMass (a 41.7 winning percentage) and 28-52 in Atlantic 10 play. The Minutemen are 12-16 this season. They’re 11th in the conference standings, currently lined up to play in the opening round of the conference tournament.

UMass has lost its last three games after falling at Fordham on Monday.
