Greg Carvel brought his newest UMass hockey assistant coach back to Western Massachusetts.

The Minutemen announced Williams College graduate Matt Lindsay will join the program as an assistant Thursday pending the successful completion of a background check.

Lindsay, who has 20 years of collegiate coaching experience, spent 10 years at Penn State, where he was a part of two NCAA Tournament qualifiers and two Big Ten championship teams.

“We are very excited to welcome Matt Lindsay to our program,” Carvel said in a release. “Matt is one of the most experienced and well-respected assistant coaches in college hockey. He has a long track record of impressive recruiting which has resulted in championship level teams at Penn State and Princeton. Matt brings a wealth of knowledge and professionalism with him to UMass and is known as one of the hardest working recruiters on the circuit. Beyond all of that he is a high quality person and he will add to the culture of our program.”

He was with the Nittany Lions when they debuted as a Division 1 program in 2012 and helped Penn State to a conference tournament championship in 2017 and regular season title in 2020.

The Nittany Lions led the nation in scoring in 2018-19. They were first in the country in goals and assists and put away 4.54 goals per game.

Lindsay coached Penn State’s first All-Americans and first Big Ten Player of the Year Cole Hults. He also recruited Trevor Hamilton, the Nittany Lions’ first major conference award winner as the 2017-18 Defensive Player of the Year.

He was an assistant at Princeton from 2007-11 when the Tigers made two NCAA Tournaments and set a school record for wins in 2009.

Lindsay also previously served as the Robert Morris video coordinator and helped with recruiting. He also coached at Colorado College, Hobart College and Utica College.

Space on UMass’ staff opened when associate head coach Ben Barr left to take Maine’s head coaching job.
