Want to step into Don Brown’s shoes and try to rebuild the UMass football program? A new college football video game gives you that chance.

EA Sports College Football 25 released to the public Monday afternoon, the highly anticipated revival of the NCAA football video game series that hadn’t been produced since 2013. The game set out to bring a realistic, simulated college football experience to consoles. So, how did UMass grade out?

The Minutemen were given a 77 overall team rating (out of 100), a 77 grade on offense and a 77 grade on defense. The game rates each team on prestige, five stars being the highest and one star the lowest. UMass was one of 46 schools to be given a one-star prestige rating.

Who does EA view as the Minutemen’s best player? That title is split between free safety Tyler Rudolph and tight end Dominick Mazotti, as each were given an 81 rating. For perspective, the highest possible rating in the game is 99 while Michigan cornerback Will Johnson, LSU left tackle Will Campbell and Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon II are the top players in the game at 96 overall.

Rudolph, a redshirt senior, started 10 games for UMass a season ago where he finished with 40 tackles, one sack, one interception and five pass breakups. Mazotti is a graduate student who transferred to Amherst after five seasons at San Jose State. In 34 games with the Spartans, Mazotti tallied 57 catches for 747 yard and found the end zone five times.

Right tackle Ethan Mottinger, cornerback Lake Ellis and center Josh Atwood are the next best players on the Minutemen roster according to EA, all three earning 79 ratings. Mottinger and Atwood started all 12 games on the line for UMass a season ago while Ellis transferred from Bryant where he recorded six picks in four season.

Rounding out the top 10 players on the Minutemen roster according to EA are middle linebacker Jalen Stewart (77), tight end Jaelyn Lay (76), defensive tackle Etinoso Reuben (76), guard Paul Tchio (76) and wide receiver Frank Ladson Jr. (76).

UMass quarterback Taisun Phommachanh, who threw for 1,507 yards and six touchdowns in nine games last year, was given a 75 rating.

One element of the game is franchise mode, where gamers can take over as a coach of any program in the country. With that, users can recruit from the high school ranks and use the transfer portal to improve the roster each season.

To make the game realistic, EA graded each program on certain categories that would be of interest to potential recruits. Like in the real world, each recruit has a different reason for deciding on what college they want to go to, some based on academics, others program tradition.

Here’s how UMass graded out in these categories, with a school-based grading system used: UMass was given a D grade in championship contender, C for program tradition, C- for campus lifestyle, D- for stadium atmosphere, D for pro potential, D- for brand exposure, C- for academic prestige and D- for athletic facilities.

While players on the Minutemen roster are in the game, none of the college coaches are in it. Therefore, Don Brown is not in the game, and an AI generated coach is used at UMass.

If you want to create yourself or a fictional player and use them in “Road to Glory” — a game mode where you experience what it’s like to be a college athlete and try to win the Heisman Trophy and national championships — you get to select which state and town your player is from.

If you want to create a player from Massachusetts, and want them to come from western Mass., EA gives you just four options to choose from: Deerfield, East Longmeadow, Easthampton and Springfield.
