Noah Fernandes is making big moves.

The former UMass men’s basketball guard announced Thursday that he’ll transfer to Rutgers for his final season of collegiate basketball. He spent three seasons at UMass after attending Wichita State as a freshman.

Fernandes averaged a team-high 13.4 points per game last season in 11 games. He shot 48 percent from the field and 45.2 percent from 3 with 45 assists and pulled down 2.5 rebounds per game. The Mattapoisett native hit a buzzer beater against Murray State in the Myrtle Beach Invitational this season.

Ironically he also sank a buzzer beater to cap a UMass comeback against the Scarlet Knights in 2021.

Rutgers went 19-15 last season and lost in the opening round of the NIT.

Fernandes is the second Minuteman to find a home out of the transfer portal after Dyondre Dominguez committed to Arkansas State. Tafara Gapare, John Kelly, R.J. Luis, and T.J. Weeks Jr. are still in the portal.

BIG TIME – UMass’ freshman class got bigger. Mathok Wieu Deng Majok announced his commitment to the Minutemen on Twitter this week. The Bridgeport Prep big man, who stands at 7-foot-3, will reclassify to the Class of 2023 and be in Amherst next season.
