The former UMass men’s basketball center will continue his basketball career at Texas, he announced Tuesday.

The sophomore originally from Pittsburgh will have three years of eligibility remaining because of the COVID-19 extra year.

The Longhorns were one of six finalists the Woodstock Academy product announced May 14. He also considered Florida State, LSU, Illinois, Georgia and Bryant.
Texas won the Big 12 Tournament title for the first time last season but fell to 15th-seeded Abilene Christian in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Coach Shaka Smart left for Marquette on March 26. The Longhorns hired former Texas Tech coach Chris Beard on April 1.
Mitchell played two seasons at UMass averaging 18.4 points per game. He was the 2020 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and was named first-team all-conference after last year.
Mitchell entered the transfer portal in March. He’s the second former Minuteman to join a Power 5 team after Ronnie DeGray III left for Missouri.
UMass went 8-7 last season in a year halted multiple times by COVID-19 protocols. The Minutemen reached the A-10 quarterfinals.
TEARS OF JOY – UMass field hockey midfielder Georgie McTear was named a second-team All-American by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. The senior is the 60th All-American in program history and first since 2017.
She was also the A-10 Offensive Player of the Year, scoring seven goals with three assists. McTear, a senior, will return to UMass next season. She has received NHFCA All-Region honors every year since 2017.
