AMHERST – In addition to reaching the NCAA Tournament, the UMass women’s lacrosse program was recognized with two members of the USA Lacrosse Magazine All-America teams Wednesday.
Senior attacker Fiona McGowan was named to the second team, while senior defender Audra Tosone received honorable mention honors.
“I think it's kind of cool looking at the list of teams, where those girls come from, and having UMass on there means a lot,” McGowan said.
McGowan leads the Minutewomen with 90 points, 43 goals and 47 assists. Her 2.61 assists per game rank sixth nationally, and she was named the Co-Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year.
Tosone is No. 7 nationally in caused turnovers per game (2.39) and picks up 3.06 ground balls per game, tied for 1oth in the country. She was named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year.
“I'm super grateful. I was injured last year, and when I was a younger girl, I always looked up to older girls, and those lists would come out and to kind of be there and be able to represent my team and all my hard work, all it comes back to is just really gratitude,” Tosone said.
UMass men’s goalie Matt Knote was also named a third-team All-American on Tuesday. The A-10 Defensive Player of the Year led the country with a .593 save percentage and ranked fourth stopping 13.43 shots per game. He started all 14 games and picked up 31 ground balls.
USA Lacrosse Magazine named him the Division I Men’s Player of the Week after UMass’ Feb. 11 win over Army.
