SOUTH HADLEY — A turkey hunter was shot and wounded by a fellow hunter Tuesday morning, suffering what authorities termed moderate injuries.

The 37-year-old Chicopee man, who was hunting alone, was first taken by other hunters to Holyoke Medical Center, then transferred to Baystate Medical Center, according to Katie Gronendyke, spokeswoman for the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

Officials did not release the victim’s name. The shooting took place at around 9:30 a.m. on conservation land off Ferry Street, just north of Brunelle’s Marina, Gronendyke said.

South Hadley Police and the Massachusetts Environmental Police are investigating the incident. Turkey hunting season began in Massachusetts on Monday and will continue until May 26.
