NORTH ADAMS — City elected official Tara Jacobs has thrown her hat into the ring for the race for the 8th District on the Governor’s Council, and she said that she’s running to be a strong voice for western Massachusetts and as a change agent for dismantling systemic injustice and promoting equity and transparency.

The Governor’s Council is charged with advising the governor and approving or rejecting the governor’s appointments for judicial and other positions, as well as pardons and commutations and warrants for the state treasury.

“It’s so little known or understood what they do,” Jacobs said. “But the work that they do is crucial.”

The 8th District covers most of western Massachusetts, including all of Hampshire County with the exception of Ware. Other candidates for the position are Michael Fenton of Springfield and Jeffrey Morneau of East Longmeadow.

Jacobs, 50, serves on the North Adams School Committee, is the chair of the board of trustees for the North Adams Public Library and is the chair of the North Adams Democratic City Committee.

Jacobs has also served on theBerkshire County Commission on the Status of Women and as a member of the Cultural Council of Northern Berkshire. She said that she’s been inspired by advocating for western Massachusetts on Beacon Hill, and wants to give voice to all the needs of the region.

Jacobs is not a lawyer, but she notes that two members of the current Governor’s Council are not lawyers either.

“I actually believe it to be a strength,” Jacobs said. “I don’t owe any favors to anyone. I don’t have personal aspirations to be nominated (to the judiciary).”

She said that she believes that having a diversity of backgrounds and opinions is important on the body, and that she intends on evaluating the impact that judges will have on the lives of those who come before them.

Additionally, Jacobs said that she wants the Governor’s Council to start livestreaming its sessions again, something the body started doing earlier in the pandemic.

Jacobs is currently gathering signatures for her campaign, and she said that she intends to criss-cross the region on a weekly basis.
