HOLYOKE — The prominent youth-led climate change organization Sunrise Movement has endorsed Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse in his bid for U.S. Congress.

Local Sunrise Movement activists announced the endorsement Thursday, citing Morse’s support of the Green New Deal — the legislative proposal to tackle climate change and other problems like economic inequality.

Morse has sought to differentiate himself on climate change issues from his opponent for the 1st Congressional District seat, longtime incumbent U.S. Rep. Richard Neal, D-Springfield. Morse came out as a supporter of the Green New Deal early in his campaign. He also has signed the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge, refusing to take money from PACS or individuals connected with the fossil fuel industry.

“Western Mass knows first-hand the threat of climate change and the urgent need to transform our economy,” Gabbi Perry, the Sunrise South Hadley Hub Coordinator and Western Mass Coalition organizer, said in a statement. “Rising temperatures are impacting agricultural production — a central part of the local economy and public health, and we are seeing extreme weather and natural disasters like never before. The Green New Deal is the only plan that will address these problems at the scale that science and justice demand.”

Neal is the only member of the Massachusetts delegation in Washington D.C. who hasn’t signed on in support of a Green New Deal resolution. Neal has received $28,500 from oil and gas interests during this election cycle, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which also notes that Neal is the top recipient in the U.S. House of donations from the “alternative energy production and services” industry.

Sunrise Movement has previously protested in front of Neal’s office in Springfield, urging him to support the Green New Deal.
