Division 3 state wrestling: South Hadley’s Isaiah Cardenales returns to semifinals

South Hadley senior wrestler Isaiah Cardenales earned two victories Friday to advance to the Division 3 state semifinals in Wakefield.

Cardenales pinned Tanner Davison of Sandwich in the 106-pound round of 16 in 56 seconds then defeated Evan Rankin of Tyngsboro 8-3 in the quarterfinals. He will face Ian Forgitano of Georgetown-Ipswitch in the semifinals.

Granby freshman Christian Perez pinned Adam Lanctot, of Foxboro, in 4 minutes, 59 seconds in the round of 16 at 106 pounds, but Forgitano pinned him in 2:50 in the quarterfinals.

He’ll face Danvers’ Matt Gagne in the consolation second round.

Junior Brandon Daniels of Gateway advanced to the 113-pound semifinal. Daniels pinned Max Leete of Danvers in the round of 16 and pinned Justin Stasiowski of Carver in the quarterfinals. He will face Rufus Koblenzer of Holliston in the semifinal.

Hampshire junior DJ Willard pinned Garret Vartanian, of Quabbin, in 5:37 in the 160-pound round of 16. Jack Anderson of Danvers pinned him in 1:49 in the quarterfinals. Willard will face Triton’s Lewi L’Heureux in the consolation second round.

Granby senior Clayton Yanosky reached the quarterfinals by pinning Hanover’s Chris Greene in 2:58 before Melrose’s Pat Whelan pinned him at 4:27. Yanosky drew Mike Yirrell of Wakefield in the consolation second round.

Stone Mitchell of Smith Voke pinned AJ Gagner of Northbridge in 4:28 in the round of 16 at 220 pounds. John Falasca of Triton beat him 4-2 in the quarterfinal, setting up a second round consolation matchup with Chris O’Brien of Norwell.

Granby senor Ben Taft advanced to the quarterfinals at 285 pounds by pinning Gloucester’s Chris Jacques in 1:01. He then lost to Wayland’s Brooks Jones 2-1 and will face Norton’s Arthur O’Neill in the consolation second round.

Division 1

Northampton’s Alex Meunier lost both of his matches at 170 pounds and is out of the tournament.

He was pinned in 1:07 by Vinnie Holmes of Mansfield in the opening round then lost 8-0 to Brookline’s Atman Barille in the consolation first round.
