SOUTHAMPTON — The Board of Water Commissioners is asking all customers to begin following voluntary water restrictions.

According to a statement released by the board, the town activated their interconnection with the city of Easthampton on July 12 to serve the Line Street, County Road and Pequot Pond areas “in an attempt to remain within our permitted withdrawal.”

Between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., seven days a week, the board is asking residents to limit non-essential water use and to not use automatic sprinklers.

Outdoor water use is restricted to an odd-even schedule based on house number, where odd numbered houses are permitted to use outdoor water on odd days, while even numbered houses may use water on even days, the statement read.

“We hope this will result in a reduction in water use,” the statement said, noting that if it doesn’t, the town will have to consider mandatory water restrictions.

Earlier this month, Northampton implemented nonessential water use restrictions.
