SOUTH HADLEY — Police arrested a town man Friday after he allegedly barricaded himself in a Upper River Road home and shot a rifle through a window at officers stationed outside during a nearly two-hour standoff.

Officers with the South Hadley Police Department responded at 5:35 p.m. Friday to an Upper River Road home for a report of a barricaded and armed man, according to Police Chief Jennifer Gundersen on the department’s Facebook page.

Town officers “assumed protective positions” around the home while they waited for assistance from the Chicopee Police Department and Massachusetts State Police, Gundersen wrote.

While South Hadley police officers were staged around the perimeter of the property, the man — who Gundersen later identified as 54-year-old Stephen Dudzik, of South Hadley — allegedly fired a rifle from his window in the direction of town police officers, the police chief wrote.

“The officers were not injured and officers did not return fire,” Gundersen said.

Officers spoke with Dudzik over a police vehicle loudspeaker and he agreed to surrender, and he was arrested around 7:21 p.m. “without injury or incident,” Gundersen wrote.

Dudzik has been charged with assault by a dangerous weapon (firearm), assault to murder (firearm), unlawful discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, and unlicensed possession of a firearm and ammunition, according to Gundersen. The police chief wrote Saturday that Dudzik is being held without bail pending his arraignment in Eastern Hampshire District Court.

“We are grateful that there were no physical injuries to this family member or our officers,” Gundersen said.
