Thank you so much for last month’s front-page Hampshire Life article, “Smith College commitment to local meat a boon to area farmers.” Smith College is lucky enough to have farmers that will provide them healthy, locally farmed animals to eat.
When there are so many farmers within 100 miles of the Pioneer Valley, I am puzzled why most restaurants in our area do not support our local meat producing farmers.
There are many farm-to-table restaurants in Vermont and Maine that serve local meat — why aren’t there more here? I would pay an extra $2 or $3 for a meal with local meat. I miss having barbecue since I don’t know of any restaurants that serve local barbecue meat.
I am one of those people who will only eat wild meat or consciously-raised animals. I have pretty much become a vegetarian when I choose to go out to a restaurant. When restaurants boast about providing local food, I find only local cheeses or vegetables on the menu. Where’s the beef?
