AMHERST — As two roads are resurfaced Tuesday, the removal of a closed bridge on Station Road, to make way for its replacement with temporary bridge, will commence.

Palmer Paving will be on West Bay Road from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on East Pleasant Street from noon to 5 p.m. as both streets get new coats of asphalt.

On West Bay Road, a detour will be in effect for commuters, requiring them to use West Pomeroy Lane in Amherst and South Maple Street in Hadley. Only local traffic will be allowed on West Bay.

Once the paving is done on West Bay, crews will be on East Pleasant, where detail officers will direct alternating one-way traffic in the project area between Strong Street and Olympia Drive.

On Station Road, the temporary bridge has been delivered, which is allowing Department of Public Works crews to begin demolition and removal of the existing bridge over the Hop Brook. That bridge has been closed to vehicles since September, though bicyclists and pedestrians have been able to continue using it.

When demolition work begins, the bridge will be fenced off until the temporary bridge installation is complete.
