Matt Sullivan threw six shutout innings, and the Northampton Mickey Mantle baseball team opened the Pioneery Valley Youth Baseball League postseason with a 5-0 win against Amherst on Wednesday at Florence Field.

He struck out eight and allowed just six hits with no walks.

Northampton will move to the tournamentโ€™s winners bracket and face top-seeded Frontier on the road at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Amherst draws TechPioneer in an elimination game at home Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Will Shaw had two RBIs, two hits and scored a run for Northampton (12-6).

Owen Shelffo singled twice, while Erik Vandergrift touched home twice.

Phin Steiniger added a hit and a sacrifice fly RBI. Eddie Sarafin had an RBI single.

Cyril Rees-Burton and Max Callan singled. Sullivan and Seth Finnessey, who threw the seventh inning and struck out two, each scored a run.

Nate Mills took the loss for Amherst after allowing five runs on six hits and five walks in five innings. He struck out seven. Thea Hanscom struck out two and allowed two hits in the sixth.

Braeden Tudryn, J.B. Mills, Cole Boisvert, Andrew Ciaglo, Ty Gladu and Ryan Schneider singled for Amherst (10-9).

Softball

Frontier Red 10, Agawam Inferno 3 โ€” Delaney Fifield hit a two-run triple in the first inning, sparking Frontier at home in a 12U Suburban win.

She finished with two hits, three RBIs and scored three runs.

Maggie Potter (double) and Margaret Edwards (single) each drove in two runs and scored twice. Ariana Miller added an RBI triple and made a great defensive play at shortstop in the sixth, snagging a ball behind her with runners on second and third to end the inning.

Melanie Ring laid down a bunt single and scored a run for Frontier (3-6).

Ashley Taylor picked up the win, allowing four hits and one earned run with five walks and eight strikeouts.

North 13, South 3 (6) โ€” Taylor picked up the win in relief in the 12U Suburban All-Star game Tuesday in Greenfield. She struck out four in two innings. She added two hits and an RBI. Fifield and Ring each had an RBI single.

Southamptonโ€™s Rosie Fellett started the game for the South, striking out four in two innings.

Josie Dubay added a two-run single. Kailyn Thayer (RBI) and Maggie Fay singled.

Taylor, Potter, Miller and Lila Montminy won the base running skills competition for Frontier Red.
