NORTHAMPTON — The Northampton Post 28 American Legion baseball team defeated Agawam Post 185, 7-2, at Arcanum Field Thursday for its third straight win.

Post 28 jumped on Post 185 early, scoring four runs in the first inning and three in the second.

Leadoff batter Jackson Heath walked then took third on a single by Andrew Grygorcewicz, who took second on a throw to third. A wild pitch during Patrick Serio’s at-bat scored Heath and pushed Grygorcewicz to third. Serio then reached on an error to put runners at the corners. A walk to Nick Heafey loaded the bases. A fielder’s choice by Jake Brittain scored Grygorcewicz and a wild pitch during Matt Bouley’s at-bat scored Serio. Bouley ended the frame with an RBI single that scored Brittain.

Northampton (3-4) capped its scoring in the second.

Nate Kelley got on base with an infield single and stole second. He scored on a single to center by Heath. Serio reached first on an error by Agawam second baseman Griffin Levesque that also sent Heath to third base. Heath scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Heafey, while Serio scored on a single to right by Brittain.

Matt Bouley was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Brittain was 1-for-2 with three RBIs, and Serio was 1-for-4 with two runs scored.

“It was pretty exciting,” Serio said. “We were just coming off two straight wins and we needed another. The fact that we were going out there and scoring runs in bunches was really helpful.”

Pitcher Will Shaw went six innings and allowed one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

“I just hope for the best,” Shaw said. “I just try to throw strikes and hope the defense makes plays.”

With runners at second and third in the top of the fourth, Heafey made a leaping catch at shortstop for the first out of the inning. A flyball to center was then dropped and a throwing error by Heafey on the same play allowed both Agawam (4-3) runners to score.

Post 28 played a clean game the rest of the way.

“Even though its three straight wins, its four straight games that we’ve played and hit really well,” coach Chuck Holt said. “Will Shaw pitched really, really well and we hit early in the game. I feel really good about the way our team is hitting in general. Lots of good at-bats.”

Post 28 will look to get its fourth straight win on Saturday against East Longmeadow Post 293 at Arcanum Field.

“We need to keep scoring early,” Holt said. “The last three games, our leadoff hitter has gotten on base to start the game, and scored a run. So if we can start early and get on top, that puts our pitchers at ease, puts our defense at ease, and everybody can stay loose and have fun.”
