Two state-supported mobile clinics in Fall River and Holyoke began administering monoclonal antibody treatment for COVID-19 last week and a third unit will be deployed to Everett on Friday, state officials said Tuesday.

The Department of Public Health announced that the three state-supported mobile treatment units will offer monoclonal antibody treatment for high-risk individuals who have tested positive for or been exposed to COVID-19. All three clinics will require referral from a health care provider for treatment.

The treatment will be provided at no cost to the patient and available regardless of immigration status or health insurance, the DPH said.

The three temporary clinics, which the DPH said “can be relocated easily based on demand,” will together have the capacity to treat 500 patients per week. Operated by the Texas-based emergency management company Gothams, they bring the number of publicly available Massachusetts locations offering monoclonal antibody treatment to 32, according to the DPH.

Monoclonal antibody treatment is available under an emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration to COVID-positive or -exposed patients 12 and older who are at high-risk for severe illness from the respiratory disease.

“These mobile sites enable individuals with early COVID-19 or who have been exposed to COVID-19 to be treated quickly and safely with monoclonal antibody infusion,” Acting Public Health Commissioner Margret Cooke said in a statement. “While the best protection against COVID-19 is vaccination, these therapies can help prevent hospitalization and severe illness for infected or exposed high-risk individuals. People with questions about whether this treatment is right for them should discuss it with their healthcare provider.”
