HOLYOKE — A Springfield man has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of a 48-year-old Chicopee woman on South Water Street early Sunday morning, according to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office.

Authorities identified the suspect as Jason Chapdelaine, 52. He was arrested by Holyoke police in connection with the death of Eileen Monaghan and is due to be arraigned on the murder charge Tuesday in Holyoke District Court.

Officials said Holyoke police responded to a 911 call at 1:30 a.m. Sunday for a report of suspicious activity on South Water Street. Officers found two adults on scene, a woman suffering from stab wounds and a man who was unresponsive “due to self-inflicted harm,” according to police. Officers rendered aid to both but were unable to save the woman’s life.

The investigation is being conducted by members of the Holyoke Police Department, Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office’s Murder Unit.
