NORTHAMPTON — A Cummington man was arraigned Monday in Northampton District Court for allegedly choking a friend in an argument.

Austin Kellogg, 35, was arraigned on one charge of strangulation, one charge of assault and battery, one charge of malicious damage to a motor vehicle, and one charge of malicious destruction of property less than $1,200.

A lawyer was appointed on Kellogg’s behalf and he was released on personal recognizance, with the conditions that he completes booking with the Easthampton Police Department and stays away from the alleged victim. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 21.

According to Easthampton Police in a court document, Kellogg allegedly struck and then choked a friend in his friend’s Easthampton home in the early morning hours of Sunday, following an evening of drinking and marijuana use. The victim’s girlfriend helped to get Kellogg out of the house, after which Kellogg allegedly damaged the siding of the home, a truck and some lawn ornaments, and ripped the mailbox off the front of the home, police say.

After Easthampton Police arrived, the reported victim refused medical assistance. Police arrested Kellogg while he was on foot.
