MIAA tourneys: Colin Murdock, Carter White lift Granby boys past Upper Cape Cod

The two-headed monster of Colin Murdock and Carter White combined for 42 points, and the Granby boys basketball team made quick working of visiting Upper Cape Cod for a 59-42 victory in the MIAA Division 5 preliminary round on Monday in Granby.
No. 24 Granby led 14-4 after one quarter and 36-17 at halftime in a game that tipped off two hours earlier than originally scheduled to allow the visitors a chance to get back to Bourne before the impending snowstorm arrived.
Murdock led all scorers with 24 points, including four 3-pointers, two of those triples coming in the first quarter to set the tone. White notched 10 of his 18 in the opening half as the Rams built a sizable early lead against No. 41 Upper Cape Cod.
Cody Breault added nine points for the host Rams (14-7), which advanced to play at No. 9 Hoosac Valley in the Round of 32 on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Cheshire.
No. 27 Ayer Shirley 77, No. 38 Smith Academy 44 – The host Panthers stormed out to a 24-12 lead after one quarter and didn’t look back en route to a 77-44 victory in the preliminary round of the Div. 5 tourney on Monday in Ayer.
Ayer Shirley (13-8), which advanced to play at No. 6 Westport in the Round of 32 on Thursday, led 40-24 at halftime and 56-36 after three. Zachary Iannacone led four players in double figures with a game-high 21 points.
Smith Academy (13-8) received a team-high 14 points from Riley Intrator, while Griffin Smiarowski had nine points and five rebounds. Greg Stone added seven points and Cam Zononi tossed in six.

No. 28 Tewksbury 59, No. 37 Amherst 46 – Christian Martin keyed an 8-0 second-quarter run for the visiting Hurricanes in the second quarter that briefly gave them a lead. But host Tewksbury outscored Amherst by a 36-25 margin after intermission to pull away for a Division 2 preliminary round win on Monday.
Tewksbury led 13-7 after one quarter before Amherst (10-11) ripped off eight straight in the second to take a 15-13 lead. The ’Canes trailed just 23-21 at halftime and 44-39 after three quarters before Tewksbury closed strong with a 15-7 edge in the fourth.
Ryan Cuvier notched 20 points for Tewskbury, which advanced to play at No. 5 Charlestown in the Round of 32 on Friday.

No. 27 Lowell Catholic 74, No. 38 Belchertown 42 – The Orioles couldn’t overcome No. 27 Lowell Catholic in a 32-point defeat on Monday night.
Lowell Catholic will move on to the Round of 32 where they’ll face No. 6 Dover-Sherborn on Friday.

No. 31 Foxboro 7, No. 34 Easthampton 1 – Rob Herman scored the lone goal for the Eagles in a loss against the Warriors at the Foxboro Sports Center. Evan Carmody picked up an assist on Herman’s goal, and Paige Galpin stopped 26 shots in net.
Despite the loss, Easthampton finished with 12 regular season wins, the most in program history since 1999.
Foxboro took the lead early when Dan Jacobs buried a rebound. By the end of the first period, the home team had a 2-0 lead and built it up from there. Foxboro scored three more goals in the middle frame and another two in the third.
Foxboro goaltender Trevor Marder stopped 33 of the 34 shots he faced to earn the win.
The Warriors will play at No. 2 Lynnfield on Wednesday in the Round of 32.
