SOUTH HADLEY — Mount Holyoke College has become the latest area college to call off its May commencement ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a video message to students, college president Sonya Stephens promised seniors that, although the ceremony and reunions will not be held as planned this May, “you will get to celebrate your achievements and this moment sometime in the future,” as well as partake in other commencement traditions.

“It is a moment where we need to say safety and good health comes above celebration,” Stephens said.

Smith College and the University of Massachusetts Amherst also made the decision to call off scheduled commencement activities this May, with Smith College announcing that the ceremony is canceled and UMass telling students that commencement is indefinitely postponed.
