50 Years Ago

A unique new concept in computer operations will be introduced when the Western Mass. Computer Center Inc. begins operations in Holyoke early next year. The operation will be jointly sponsored by five local banks and will afford the opportunity to provide better and faster customer service.

■Sen. Edward M. Kennedy will visit Northampton Monday, Mayor Sean M. Dunphy announced today. Dunphy said the schedule for the senator was incomplete but a breakfast at the Hotel Northampton would be one highlight of the day.

25 Years Ago

■Mayor Mary Ford today pledged $32,500 in community economic development funds to Community Trust Inc., a nonprofit community lending institution established in 1993. Community Trust has yet to loan any money, but with Ford’s commitment of matching funds, the new institution is closer to its goal of lending capital to start-up businesses in Hampshire and Franklin County.

■Come January, patrons of the Forbes Library will likely be forced to adjust their routines to an ambitious schedule of construction. The schedule is not yet set, but it undoubtedly will include the closing of the entire library for some weeks.
