■Charles N. DeRose, publisher of the Daily Hampshire Gazette and one of the most prominent figures in the business and civic life of Northampton, died suddenly early today at his summer home in Watch Hill, R.I., of a heart attack. A lifelong resident of Northampton, he had been associated with the Gazette most of his life and was one of the founders of radio station WHYN and television Channel 40.

■Harry E. Childs of 12 Fruit St. and Claude L. Hough of 74 Barrett St. have been appointed to assistant director positions in the Smith college Development Office. They will assist Jett D. Thomas, former Yale Alumni Fund secretary, who was recently named as director of development at Smith.

The general contractor for the expansion and renovation of the JFK Middle School is promising that the new addition will be ready for occupancy Feb. 1. And he told school officials last week that the entire project will be sufficiently advanced by September of 1996 to allow the whole complex to open for business.

■Jeannine and Peter Lawall have owned Micro Research, a Macintosh sales, rental, repair and service business, for six years. Today they’re opening a second business, Digital Media, next door to their current location in the Carriage Shops in downtown Amherst.
