Thank you Andrea Ayvazian for sharing how personal climate change is for you [“Weeping for Denali,” Gazette, April 22]. Numbers and statistics alone don’t paint a complete picture. Relating stories from our own lives can be an effective way to illustrate the effects of climate change.
I share Andrea’s melancholy. I visited Denali National Park in 1987 and enjoyed the snowy views. However, in 2013 when I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro with my sons, I was horrified by the lack of snow even close to the summit. Worse, during a week of hiking in Glacier National Park in 2017, I could barely believe my eyes — the glaciers were nearly all gone.
We have to enlist more people in the fight against climate change. We need more voters to vote for climate solution providers, and we need more consumers to vote with their wallets. Perhaps telling our own stories of loss will spur others to act. If you are moved by Andrea’s story please join the Citizens Climate Lobby and help make a difference in the world!
