Bill Saunders: Afghanistan mistakes

I would like to append a comment to the Oct. 1 letter by Paul M. CraIg entitled “The Afghanistan mistake.” I agree with him on all points, but I would add this:

It has long been my impression that our leaders in Washington approach the non-western world by choosing to deal with that thin layer of western-educated elites who speak English but have no rapport with the mass of people. Many come from the commercial class and have little concept of modern government and less about the military. Many of them see government service merely as an opportunity to enrich themselves and provide jobs for their relatives.

The results are predictable and when the roof starts to cave in they flee the country.

We did this in China with Chiang Kai-Shek, again in Vietnam with Diem and Thieu and again in Afghanistan with Karzai and Ghani.

It’s time our experts learned a lesson.
