The Amherst Democratic Town Committee has issued the following statement condemning the murder of George Floyd.

“The Amherst Democratic Town Committee condemns the May 25, 2020 murder of George Floyd by four members of the Minneapolis Police Department. Mr. Floyd’s murder is only the latest in a long history of dehumanizing violence perpetrated upon Black Americans by agents of our government and forces us to demand again and again that Black Lives Matter.

“In the words of that old labor organization, an injury to one is the concern of all. In the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Police officers in a democracy are entrusted with the power of the sovereign and so take on a sacred responsibility. It is a challenging, and should be a sobering, responsibility. Officers must start from a place of respect for the inherent dignity and equality of each member of our society, even while enforcing the people’s law against those members that would seek to escape justice.

“We are under no pretensions that this is an easy task, nor even always a comprehensible one. However, we do know that racism, white supremacy, and celebrations of violence have no place among the ranks of those entrusted with the people’s power. To believe otherwise is to reject democracy and freedom and embrace a police state.

“Therefore, we call upon the General Court of the Commonwealth to strengthen laws holding rogue officers accountable; to strengthen whistleblower protections; and to strengthen the power of police chiefs to review and investigate discriminatory acts and statements by officers and to remove such officers immediately when they are discovered. And, we ask that our local officials take this as a time to review policies and protocols with an eye towards preemptively preserving the rights, life, and dignity of all Amherst residents and affirming that Black Lives Matter in our community.”
