Hatfield church to hold school fundraiser for families in need

HATFIELD — Recognizing that some Hatfield Elementary School children’s families are facing financial struggles, members of Hatfield Congregational Church have created a charitable program designed to assist them.

Kindness for Kids, which came into existence about a year ago, began with the church’s benevolence committee.

On Saturday from 8:30 to 10 a.m., the 41 Main St. church is holding a pancake breakfast, with a Valentine’s Day theme, to add money to the program’s account.

“This is our first major fundraiser,” Rev. Randy Calvo, pastor at the church, said. 

Calvo said that “K4K” began with collections at the church, and was enhanced when the Hatfield Firefighters Association chose to donate $1,000 raised through its summer bonfire. Since its creation, both Our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church and the elementary school have partnered with the program.

All money raised is kept in a benevolence fund and only disbursed at the request of school officials, usually, when an administrator identifies a need, Calvo said. The assistance provided may include offsetting the cost of a school trip, covering an extracurricular activity or sports fee or providing clothing or some other essential. Last fall, backpacks were purchased and given to students, he said. 

In addition to the pancakes, sausage, coffee, tea and juice, a card-making table will be set up where children can make Valentine’s Day cards for family and friends.
