SOUTHAMPTON —  An interim superintendent for the Hampshire Regional School District could be named Wednesday.

“For all intents and purposes, this is an emergency appointment of a department head,” said Jon Lumbra, chairman of the William E. Norris School Committee, who is on the search subcommittee for an interim schools chief. Hampshire Regional School District Superintendent Aaron Osborne announced his resignation in August and had his last day on the job on Aug. 28.

The subcommittee consists of two members from each of the school committees in the Hampshire Regional School District: the Hampshire Regional School Committee, the William E. Norris School Committee, the Williamsburg School Committee, the Westhampton School Committee and the New Hingham Regional School Committee.

The search subcommittee planned to interview four applicants Thursday and Friday, Umbra said, then assess whether to interview any of the other five people who applied for the position. On Wednesday, he said, the committee will put forward two to three candidates to a joint meeting of the five school committees held via videoconferencing. Each of these candidates will answer three questions in the public meeting, and the committees will then deliberate.

“Hopefully at the end of the night, all five committees will agree on one candidate,” Lumbra said.

The interim superintendent is being hired for this school year. Lumbra said his subcommittee is expected to ask that the search for a permanent superintendent begin in January, and he expressed hope this would be a more in-depth process.
