I’m not a farmer — what can I do?

Here are suggestions from the farmers featured in this story:

■Plant an edible, no-till garden of any size — even a window box. 

■Plant a tree.

■Become familiar with pending legislation such as the Massachusetts Healthy Soils Bill and talk to your representatives about the issue.   

■Shop locally to support farmers and craftspeople and cut down on fossil fuel transport.   

■Invest in funds that will aid farmers, such as Dirt Capital and PVGrows (Pioneer Valley Grows Investment Fund) and encourage them to support carbon farmers.  

■If you eat meat, make sure it’s grass-fed.
