AMHERST – A hazardous waste collection day for residents of Amherst and four surrounding towns will take place at the Amherst Transfer Station and Recycling Center next month.

The collection day on Sept. 25 gives residents of Amherst, Pelham, Hadley, Shutesbury and Leverett the opportunity to come to the 740 Belchertown Road site to safely dispose of a variety of items, including herbicides, motor oil, car batteries, antifreeze, bleach, kerosene and pool chemicals.

Advance registration is required by Sept. 14 and participation  is limited. All who register will be scheduled to drop-off windows between 9 a.m. and noon.

Hadley, Shutesbury and Leverett residents will be assessed $20 fees for up to 3 gallons or pounds of hazardous materials, $30 fees for between 3 and 10 gallons or pounds, and $50 for between 10 and 25 gallons or pounds. In addition, Amherst residents will be assessed a $10 participation fee if they have no sticker for use of the transfer station, and will be assessed a disposal fee if their hazardous waste exceeds 25 gallons or pounds.

To register for the event visit www.amherstma.gov/recycling. For those without computer access, hard copies of the registration form can be picked up at local Public Works, Highway and Health departments, or at the Amherst transfer station.
