High schools: Northampton golf edges Belchertown by one stroke in battle of top Hampshire County programs

The Northampton boys golf team edged Belchertown by one stroke, 175-176, in a Suburban East showdown between top Hampshire County squads on Thursday at Cold Spring Country Club in Belchertown.

Belchertown’s Michael Murray put up the low score with a 40 and Daniel Hulmes was right behind him with a 42, but Northampton’s quartet of Reed O’Connor (42), Jack Carpenter (43), Reilly Fowles (45) and Brent Baronowski (45) barely edged the Orioles. Other Belchertown scorers were Brady Jolly (46) and Jared Haynes (48).

The Blue Devils only lost two regular season matches from 2020-2023 and are off to another good start after a 16-0 regular season campaign last year, despite graduating four seniors. Belchertown moves to 2-1 after wins over South Hadley and Amherst to start the year.

Frontier 161, Chicopee 214 — The Redhawks posted the low three scores of the day to get past Chicopee.

Ryan Cetto took home medalist honors with a 37 and Cam Skiffington (39) and Porter Hall (40) followed right behind. 

Hampshire 161, West Springfield 188 — Brayden Fennessey led the Raiders to their fourth consecutive win to start the season by nabbing medalist honors with a 37.

Riley Florek (39), Cam Jorosz (42) and Cole Boissonneault (43) rounded out the top four scores of the day.

Boys soccer

Ludlow 2, Amherst 0 — The ‘Canes dropped to 0-1-1 with a shutout home Smith League loss.

Jacob Gladu scored Belchertown’s lone goal, assisted by Austin Raymer. Jack Mandeville made nine saves in goal.

Smith Voc 3, PVCICS 1 — Rafi Razmi opened up the scoring for the Dragons with a strike from deep less than a minute into the match, but defending league champ Smith Voc came back with two goals in the first half and another in the second half to knock off PVCICS in what was the season opener for both teams. 

Damian Loinaz made 11 saves for PVCICS.

Hopkins 7, Sci-Tech 1 — Nathan Rickles led the way with two goals for the Golden Hawks as six different players found the back of the net.

Liedson Miranda, Chase Simonich, Owen Cain, Sam Pearson and Lucas Silva all tallied goals as well in the win.

Gateway 4, Mount Everett 0 — The Gators led by two at the half and doubled their advantage in the second half to start the season at 1-0. 

Ivan Chepurenko scored and added two assists, while Eli Chepurenko, Michael Nieves  and Landon McCaul also scored. Goalie Zach Hess made seven saves.

Girls soccer

Easthampton 4, Holyoke 0 — Samone Young scored a brace and Arie Kuchyt and Addie Barr also tallied in a home win for the Eagles.

Raegan Delisle and Liv O’Neill-Garvey recorded assists and Barr made two saves in goal.

Frontier 9, St. Mary’s 0 — Carly Robertson scored a hat-trick and five other Redhawks cracked the score sheet in a resounding season-opening win.

Robertson also notched two assists, including one on a corner to Jazzy Hayes, who headed the ball in. Skyler Steele scored twice and Maddie Fagan, Faythe Sobieski and Josie Fosnot also scored.  

Field hockey

Northampton 2, Mahar 0 — Camilla Brewer and Talya Fishman each scored to lead the Blue Devils to their first win of the season on home turf.

Smith Academy 2, Southwick 1 – Alexa Jagodzinski scored both goals, including the eventual game-winner with no time left in the second quarter off a penalty corner under the lights at Smith College.

Madison Didonna-Renner made 13 saves in net as the Falcons moved to 2-0.

 Girls volleyball

Southwick 3, Granby 0 — The Rams fell 25-17, 25-16, 25-6 in their season opener.

South Hadley 3, Commerce 1 — The Tigers improved to 2-0 on the season with a decisive four-set win over Commerce on Thursday.

Senior captain Raquel Losty had seven kills, five aces and 10 digs to lead the way

Set scores were 25-18, 25-21, 18-25, 25-9.

Talia Quinn had a team-high 15 digs while Grace Matyzewski recorded 12 digs, five kills and five aces.

Smith Voc 3, Hampden Charter 0 — The Vikings breezed past Hampden Charter for their second win in as many days, winning 25-17, 25-23, 25-9.

Heidymar Diaz Lopez led the way with 6 aces. 3 assists, 3 digs, 7 kills and 2 blocks. 

Irelyn Marcoux contributed six kills, Katelyn Fedora added four and Roma Bentrewicz tallied three. Jaelyn Kulas led Smith Voc with 10 digs.

Boys cross country

Hampshire 15, St. Mary’s 50

 The Raiders dominated their three meets on Wednesday, leaving no doubt by taking the top seven spots at Stanley Park in Westfield.

Oscar Shiff (first, 17:56), Aidan Conklin (second, 18:17), Jack Laliberte (third, 18:24), Nick Jones (fourth, 18:28), Augustus Niswonger (fifth, 19:28), Sam Plumer (sixth, 19:40) and Adam Muller (seventh, 19:47) all turned in impressive races for Hampshire.

Girls cross country

Hampshire 15, St. Mary’s 50
Hampshire 15, McCann 50 —
 Just as the boys did, the girls cruised to a sweep of their own on Wednesday at Stanley Park.

The top seven also belonged to Hampsihre, with Kathleen Barry (first, 21:48), Alex Henrichon (second, 21:50), Charlotte Niswonger (third, 23:03), Ada Corner (fourth, 23:04),  Keegan Butler (fifth, 23:47), Natalie Dunlap (sixth, 24:05) and Amelia Perry (seventh, 24:18) putting together strong outings in the win.
