High schools: John Viola shuts down Monson as South Hadley baseball picks up 1-0 win

Two days removed from a 1-0 loss to Ware, the South Hadley baseball team came out on top in another pitchers’ duel on Wednesday.

John Viola went the distance for South Hadley, striking out four while walking just two and scattering three hits to help the Tigers to a 1-0 victory over Monson.

Viola also scored the team’s lone run in the top of the fourth inning, scoring on an RBI single from Jack Maziarz. Gavin Carpenter had two hits for the Tigers, which outhit Monson 8-3.

Granby 13, Ludlow 5 — The Rams trailed 2-0 after the opening frame, but their bats wasted no more time waking up as they hung 13 runs over the next three innings.

Nik Misiaszek (RBI), Brandon Carillon (RBI) and Anthony Santiago (three RBI) each ripped two hits in the win, while Gavin Kennedy (one hit, two RBI, two runs) Colin Murdock (one hit, two runs, RBI) and Brodie Funk (one hit, three runs) contributed at the plate as well. Carillon (four strikeouts) tossed five innings on the hill and Santiago came in to close it out.

St. Mary’s 5, Smith Voc 2 – Tyler Carlson struck out eight on the mound in a complete-game outing for the Vikings, and also had two hits (including a double) and an RBI at the plate.

Smith Voc scored in the top of the first inning to take a quick 1-0 lead but a four-spot in the third from the Saints helped put things out of reach.

Pioneer 10, Frontier 0 — The Redhawks’ bats had no answer for Pioneer’s Hugh Cyhowski, who carried a no hitter into the waning innings before a Grayson Loos double broke that up.

Still, Frontier couldn’t generate enough offense to hang with the Panthers bats (11 hits). Tyler Cusson and Wyatt Edes split duties on the mound for the Redhawks.

Gateway 19, Commerce 8 (6) — Seven runs in the second inning helped the Gators to an 11-run win on Wednesday afternoon.

Dalton Savoy earned the start for Gateway and tossed three innings, tallying five strikeouts and three walks in the victory. At the plate, Levi Savoy went 3-for-5 and scored three runs.

Boys lacrosse

Wahconah 20, Amherst 10 – An eight-point effort from Skyler Ferro wasn’t enough for the Hurricanes, as they were doubled up by Wahconah in an offensive explosion on Wednesday afternoon.

Ferro tallied four goals and four assists in the loss, while Silas Hazen added four goals of his own. Tre Bowman (one goal, two assists) and Tri Nguyen (one goal, one assist) were other point getters for Amherst.

Longmeadow 18, South Hadley 7 – Owen Dawson netted a hat trick for the Tigers in an independent loss on Wednesday.

Ethan Roy scored a pair of goals for South Hadley, while Noah Marion (1G, 1A), Sly Curto (1G) and Dylan Molina (1A) also factored into the scoring. Bennett Allen made 11 saves in the Tigers net.

Boys tennis

Northampton 3, East Longmeadow 2 — The Fowles brothers were back at it again on Wednesday afternoon, dominating their singles matchups to help the Blue Devils to their third consecutive win to start their spring campaign.

Reilly Fowles (6-0, 6-1) breezed through his match at first singles while Galen Fowles (6-0, 6-2) made quick work of his. Elsewhere, Durrell Patrick completed the singles sweep for Northampton at No. 3 singles, as he earned a 6-2, 6-2 win to give the Blue Devils their third victory of the day.

Softball

Hampshire 21, Ludlow 0 (5) – The Raiders scored 10 times in the top of the third inning en route to the run-ruled victory.

Hampshire smacked 18 hits, including three from CC Thayer (three runs scored). Rachel Hickox (two hits, two RBIs), Ashley Cortis (two hits, three runs), Teagan Charles (two hits, three RBIs), Raegan Dubay (two hits, two RBIs) and Kalin Dubay (two hits, two runs) all recorded multiple hits.

Ryanne Dubay struck out four in three scoreless innings for Hampshire, and Hickox also recorded four strikeouts in two shutout frames.

Lee 4, Amherst 0 – Bri Lynch struck out 15 for the Wildcats, blanking Amherst in a battle of top pitchers on Wednesday.

Lynch allowed just two hits – singles by Nina Holden and Steph Barton – and didn’t walk a batter.

Amherst ace Sofia Holden notched 14 strikeouts and also allowed just two hits to go with three walks. Lee scored twice in the fourth and two more times in the sixth.

Agawam 18, Holyoke 0 (5) – Jayshalee Santos and Alanna Bonilla each had a hit for the Purple Knights in a loss on Wednesday in Holyoke.

Westfield Tech 6, Gateway 3 — The Gators raced out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but their offense was stymied the rest of the way by Westfield Tech pitcher Allyssa Slack, who fanned a dozen Gateway batters.

Alexi Bonenfant, Sawyer Wilkinson, Willow Hicks and Kaitlyn Maynard tallied hits for the Gators, with Hicks and Maynard driving in runs. Gateway’s Angela Magyar struck out 12 in the circle, with only three of her six runs given up being earned.

Turners Falls 19, Frontier 0 (5) — Make it three straight for the Thunder to start the year, as they handled the Redhawks a day after a 22-2 win over Northampton.

Frontier surrendered 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning, and it couldn’t climb out of the deep hole it dug itself with only three hits at the plate. Ashley Taylor (two singles) and Sophia Pinardi (single) combined for the Redhawks hits.

Wahconah 22, Northampton 2 (5) —  For the third consecutive day, the Blue Devils were on the wrong end of a 20-run discrepancy against a powerhouse program.

At the dish, Haly Doucette-Kaplan drove in a run on a triple while Caroline Riordan, Lily Pelis, Olivia Evans and Ella Daillie each recorded singles in Blue Devils’ loss.

Track & field

Easthampton 82, Monson 51 (girls); Easthampton 87, Monson 26 (boys) — Giuseppe DeNucce-Simms won the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches), discus (101-3), shot put (32-11) and long jump (18-8) to pace the Eagles boys on Wednesday. Easthampton’s Max Dopp grabbed first in the 200-meter dash (24.7 seconds) and 400 (58.4), while Jack Skowron won the javelin (92-0).

Elsewhere, Morgan Wijnhoven took first the 100m dash (13.6) and 200m dash (28.9), Leia Halfacre won the shot put (21-11.5) and Addie Barr earned first-place finishes in the mile (6:28) and 800 (2:59). Arie Kuchyt won the long jump with a jump of 13-08.25.

Frontier 145, Athol 0 (girls); Frontier 116, Athol 19 (boys) — The defending Intercounty League track champion Frontier Redhawks looked every bit the part in their opening meet of the season on Wednesday against Athol. 

Hannah Davis led the way for the Redhawk girls, taking first in the long jump (14 feet, .25 inches), triple jump (29-10.75) and 100 hurdles (19.1 seconds) while Leah Gump won the mile (5:53) and 2 mile (12:39). 

Boys volleyball

Holyoke 3, Duggan 0 — Three sets were all the Purple Knights needed to notch win No. 4 of the season, as they received six kills and five aces from Adrian Centeno-Feliciano and seven kills and five digs from Gedeon Ortiz.

Michael Melendez (11) and Ian Soler Rivera (10) combined for 21 assists in triumph. Set scores were 25-11, 25-10, 25-11 in favor of Holyoke.

Pioneer Valley Christian 3, South Hadley 0 — The Tigers kept it close in the first set, but lost their mojo the rest of the way en route to a straight set loss to drop their first match of the season.

Set scores were 26-24, 25-9, 25-19.

Granby 3, Athol 1 — Make it five in a row for the Rams to start the season. Granby earned a gentlemen’s sweep over the Bears on the road on Wednesday evening to improve to 5-0 on the early campaign.

Set scores were 25-19, 24-26, 25-11, 25-16.

Michael Swanigan put down a game-high 15 kills and dished out eight assists to lead Granby, while Braedan Gallagher (eight kills, nine assists) and Jake Gagnon (six kills, game-high 16 assists) also contributed offensively in the win.

Late Tuesday results

Girls lacrosse

Northampton 16, Brattleboro Union 3 – The Blue Devils took a 10-1 lead and didn’t look back in a dominant victory.

Six goals from Teagan McDonald set the tone offensively for Northampton, and Olivia Wright added a hat trick.

Softball

Frontier 15, Athol 3 (5) — An 11-run first inning powered the Redhawks past the Bears in an independent contest in Athol Tuesday. 

Skyler Steele cracked three hits, one a double, and brought in three runs, Ashley Taylor doubled, singled and knocked in a run, Delaney Fifield doubled while Sophia Pinardi, S Melnick, Olivia Machon and Gabby Adams each had a hit and an RBI for Frontier. Taylor tossed all five innings, striking out nine and giving up four hits. 

Track & field

Longmeadow 83, Amherst 61 – Elizabeth Sawicki won a pair of events, taking first in the 400-meter hurdles (1:16.3) and pole vault (7 feet, 6 inches) to pace the ’Canes.

Kora Brisset (100, 12.8), Maddie Hockman (200, 26.9), Moriah Luetjen (400, 59.5) and Sanaa Johnson (shot put, 29-0) all snagged wins for Amherst. The Hurricanes won the 4x100 relay (Olo Baptiste, Ruby Austin, Brisset, Hockman) in 51.5 seconds, and the 4x400 relay team of Baptiste, Ruby Austin, Brooke Nedeau and Luetjen took first in 4:44.1

 At the Tammy Schondelmeyer Invitational in Bloomfield, Conn. over the weekend, Amherst’s Logan Alfandari threw a PR of 163-2 in the discus to capture a victory. Calvin Miller won the mile in 4:39, and Luetjen took third in the 200 (26.76).

In the prestigious Arcadia Invitational in California over the weekend, David Pinero-Jacome broke the two-minute mark in the 800 mete rs with a time of 1:59.80.
