Jack Vecellio started the outdoor track season in record fashion.
The Clemson commit and Frontier Regional star senior set the Redhawks’ outdoor school mark with a pole vault that cleared 15-feet, 6 inches in a 121-16 win over Pioneer on Friday in South Deerfield.
Vecellio doubled up in the 400 hurdles, crossing the line first in 57.9 seconds.
Ian Burt was a part of four event victories. He won the long jump (17-1.25), triple jump (37-10) and 400 (56.4). Burt also anchored Frontier’s winning 4×400 relay (4:10.3), running with Luke Howard, Ben Cachiguango and Aidan Valderrama. Cachiguango also was first in the 100 (13.0), and Howard took first in the mile (5:11.9). Daniel Widmer captured the 2-mile in 11:16.
Alex Schreiber added event wins in the shot put (31-11), discus (93-11) and 4×100. Aidan Dredge, Jack Storm and Cachiguango each ran a leg with him in the 4×100 (51.2). Dredge additionally won the javelin (129-0), while Storm crossed the line first in the 200 (25.7).
Erich Brown captured three individual victoreis in the high jump (6-0), 110 hurdles (21.5) and 800 (2:18.3).
Frontier 117, Pioneer 28 – Frontier placed first in all but one event on Friday night in a convincing win over Pioneer in its first dual meet of the season.
Caroline Crocker won three individual events for the Redhawks, leaping 14-8 in the long jump and cruising to wins in the 100 hurdles (16.5) and 200 meter dash (28.6); she out-leaned her opponent in the 200 by two tenths of a second.
Abigail Howard and Alena Maes-Polan both won two individual events of their own; Howard cleared 5-0 in the high jump and dropped a 2:45.1 in the 800 meter run, while Maes-Polan propelled herself to a 9-6 height in pole vault and ran a 77.4 in the 400 hurdles.
Mt. Greylock 16, South Hadley 14 – Gabi Moroney scored four goals and finished with five points but the South Hadley girls lacrosse team dropped a tight 16-14 decision to visiting Mount Greylock in season-opening action Friday in South Hadley.
South Hadley’s Olivia Marion notched four points (3G, 1A) to aid the offense. Ella Marion, Maddy McArdle, and Margaret Watkins each picked up two goals in the loss.
Holyoke 3, Southwick 0 – Holyoke got better as its match with Southwick went on, winning in straight sets (25-19, 25-13, 25-6) on the road.
Jairam Rodriguez had a strong well-rounded effort for the Purple Knights, finishing with six kills, 10 assists, and a team-lead ing 17 digs. Joseph Albino contributed to the defensive efforts with 13 digs, and Willie Lopez led the scoring effort with seven kills and four aces to go along with his seven assists.
Northampton 15, Amherst JVA 6 – Liam Reynolds led the Blue Devils with five goals, two assists and two deflections on Friday against Amherst’s JVA team.
Soren Fischer notched seven assists for Northampton, and Ro Dunkerly finished with two goals, two assists, and two deflections. Charlie Reade and Alex Runkins led Northampton’s defensive effort with four deflections apiece.
