NORTHAMPTON – Herrell’s Ice Cream & Bakery in Northampton will be hosting its first Great Ice Cream Eating Competition on Saturday at noon.

The contest is offering a Valentine’s Day themed grand prize which includes a night at the Hotel Northampton, dinner for two at Paul and Elizabeth’s, a bottle of bubbly from Provisions, a box of chocolates from Heavenly Chocolates, a $100 gift card from Thornes Marketplace and a Herrell’s Ice Cream gift certificate and T-shirt. Second and third place prizes are sponsored by Herrell’s.

“The whole idea is to have more people to come into Northampton,” said Judy Herrel, owner of Herrell's Ice Cream.

Competitors, who must be 18 years or older to enter, are challenged to eat as much ice cream as they can in five minutes. The flavors offered are cookie dough, mud pie, chocolate, black raspberry and vanilla. The deadline to enter the competition was Jan. 30.

The ice cream will be weighed before the competition starts and after consumption, whoever eats the most will be awarded the grand prize.

The idea came from Herrell’s manager Sophia Twarog who was astounded by how much attention the event has received

“Who knew it would be so popular?” said Twarog after seeing that the event had 25,000 views on Facebook.

Twenty participants have signed up which Herrell’s plans to split up into two or three groups.

“If there’s a tie, we’ll have an eat off,” Herrell said laughing. “It’s all in good fun.”

The shop also plans to have an EMT at the event in case of an emergency.

“We don’t expect anything, but we have it for safety purposes,” Herrell said. “We always put safety first.”
