Sabrina Herman: Highlight Empty Arms, other local resources

I am a local psychotherapist trained and specializing in maternal mental health, as well as in perinatal and postpartum trauma and loss. I’m writing in response to the article focusing on infant death and miscarriage in the Nov. 18 edition.

I am grateful that you shed light on an incredibly important topic that doesn’t get enough attention. Indeed, it is a reality that many families experience, but perhaps due to our societal fear around such a painful topic, it is not getting enough light.

I do, however, want to say that the Gazzette was remiss in leaving out one of our most important local resources right here in the Pioneer Valley backyard: Empty Arms Bereavement Support, founded and directed by Carol McMurrich. I would ask that you turn that beacon of light toward this incredible local resource, as well as our local wealth of support and knowledge in the Valley.

In addition, we have a number of highly trained clinicians as myself in the field of perinatal postpartum mental health that I hope can be exposed. One does not need to go far to reach these resources. We have the Center for Perinatal Wellness, directed by Lauren Harris, for example, and other highly trained individuals in the field.

Let it be known that Empty Arms Bereavement Support, Carol and her amazing colleagues hold and carry parents through incredible times of grief, loneliness and isolation. Empty Arms has and continues to be a source of deep healing for so many.

Please shine light on the local fearless souls that hold the grief and offering of love and strength to so many. I ask that you shine that light on our very own backyard gardens of hope.
