HATFIELD — Jennifer Chapin, principal of Hatfield Elementary School for more than a decade, has left the district to be the assistant principal of Westfield Intermediate School.

“It was a very bittersweet kind of decision,” Chapin said on Monday. “I love Hatfield and I loved my time there, but sometimes you just get to a point where you can’t grow anymore. This is an opportunity to grow.”

Westfield Intermediate School’s larger enrollment, currently at over 800 students, was part of the draw for Chapin.

“Just the school I’m working in is double the enrollment of Hatfield — one school,” she said.

Chapin became interim principal of Hatfield Elementary in August 2007, and about a year later, she was hired for the permanent position. She cited increasing enrollment and starting a forest learning program as some of her accomplishments as the school’s leader.

In 2015, Chapin was a finalist for superintendent of Granby Public Schools. Chapin’s last day was June 30, according to an update on the Hatfield Public Schools website. Hatfield Elementary is now looking for an interim principal for the next school year and posted the position online on June 20. School officials could not be reached for comment Monday.
