After suffering its first regular-season loss in nearly two years, the Belchertown Post 239 Senior American Legion baseball team got back in the win column on Monday evening.
A trio of Post 239 pitchers combined to give up just one hit, and a pair of runs in the second and fifth innings were all Belchertown needed to get past Longmeadow 4-0 on its home field at Belchertown High School.
Alex West earned the start on the mound, and he threw four flawless frames for Post 239. West struck out three and didn’t allow a hit, walk or run. Jake Waller came in to relieve West and continued to shut down Longmeadow. Waller gave up one hit but added three strikeouts and no walks in three innings of work before Brodie Funk came in to close things out in the top of the seventh – tossing a perfect inning to earn the save.
Jake Smith was the catalyst of Belchertown’s offense. The Williston Northampton product tallied two hits – both doubles – and drove in two runs while scoring once himself. Smith also drew a walk as he reached base in every plate attempt on Monday. Chace Earle returned to action after dealing with an injury and he recorded a hit and a run while Waller (run), Evan Ferguson and Spencer Waite each hit safely for Post 239 in the win. Canyon Charron walked twice and scored a run as well.
Belchertown improved to 3-1 on the season and next takes on Monson Post 241 on the road Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
Westfield Post 124 12, Northampton Post 28 6 — Trailing 3-1 in the top of the fourth, Aiden Keeling-Lococo ripped a double to score two runs and knot the game up at three heading into the bottom half of the frame. However Post 124 responded with six runs and pulled away to win on Monday evening at Jaychm Field in Westfield.
Keeling-Lococo added a triple and scored a run to go along with his double and two RBIs to lead Northampton’s offense, Matt Vassallo ripped a pair of hits and Cody Keel scored two runs for Post 28.
Up next for Northampton (2-1), which lost for the first time this season, is a matchup against West Springfield Post 207 at 5:45 p.m. at Arcanum Field in Florence.
