Jared Waite matched Rutherford’s 41 for South Hadley.
Amherst pulled away behind victories in the No. 3 through No. 5 spots.
Piet Hartman beat Nick Cirone, 3½-½ at No. 3. Chase Lashway swept Sean Sears at No. 4 and Ben Oats beat Ben Gardiner, 3½-½ at No. 5.
Amherst (3-0, 3-0 Suburban East) stayed perfect on the young season. It was the first loss for South Hadley (3-1, 2-1).
