Dear Readers
Many of you have asked about recent developments at the Gazette. The staffing changes we’re making keep the Gazette moving forward while we wait until the economy improves. Our local communities and businesses are facing a terrible crisis, and that has translated into a temporary decline in advertising. We expect it to return, but in the meantime our staffing has to match the decline in advertising lineage. As all of you know, the fall/winter resurgence of the pandemic is hitting the Northampton area very hard.
Most of the positions we are eliminating are those that do not create any content. Our aim is to reduce or eliminate the impact on our readers and customers. Regarding the editor-in-chief change, we’ve consolidated the position of editor of the Gazette and Recorder into one position. Joan Livingston, current Greenfield Recorder editor, and a great editor with decades of experience in newspaper reporting and editing, is taking that position. This protects two reporting positions.
On the other side of the pandemic, our structure will allow us to focus our resources on reporting the news. While never pleasant, everything we’ve done is with the future in mind and with every intent on remaining a strong paper for years to come.
