Less than 48 hours removed from her gold medal in the 200 meters on Tuesday, Florence’s Gabby Thomas and the U.S. women’s 4x100 relay team advanced to the finals by winning their heat in 41.94 seconds on Thursday.
Thomas will look for her second gold medal of the Paris Olympics in the 4x100 relay final on Friday at 1:30 p.m. The U.S. will run in lane No. 5 as the No. 1 qualifier.
Great Britain’s time of 41.55 on July 20 ranks as the best time of the year and they are the only country with a better season’s best than the U.S.

In Tokyo, Thomas anchored the Americans to a silver medal in the 4x100 relay.
On Thursday, 100 meter bronze medalist Melissa Jefferson ran the first leg, Twanisha Terry ran the second leg, Thomas ran the third leg and 100 silver medalist Sha’Carri Richardson anchored the relay. Terry held the lead as she finished her leg, but Thomas had to slow down as she received the baton, and Germany took the lead. Richardson came back on the home straightaway to pass German runner Rebekka Haase and win by 0.19 seconds.
Though Thomas began her track career at the Williston Northampton School as a 100 runner – and won five New England titles in it – she began to prioritize the 200 in college and in her professional career. She trains with three-time U.S. Olympian Tonja Buford-Bailey and a crew of sprinters, and they typically run the 100, 200 and 400 in practice.
Thomas did not run the 100 at the U.S. Olympic Trials or the Paris Olympics to focus on the 200. There is no 4x100 relay at the Olympic Trials – teams are decided on the ground in Paris.
The Americans won the 4x100 relay at London 2012 and Rio 2016 before their silver medal in Tokyo.
