NORTHAMPTON – An electrical problem in the compressor of a refrigeration unit started a small fire late Tuesday morning at Joe’s Cafe on Market Street.

Northampton Deputy Fire Chief Chris Norris said crews arrived to a site full of smoke, after an employee quickly doused the fire with a fire extinguisher. The restaurant’s Tuesday hours are 4 to 11 p.m. and Market Street was shut down for about 10 minutes during the incident.

The fire caused less than $1,000 worth of damage, most of which involved fire extinguisher residue and smoke damage, Norris said. The city’s building inspector and board of health also were called to the scene, Norris said.
