NORTHAMPTON — One of the owners of Faces spoke for the first time on Wednesday since the business suddenly closed its doors on Sunday.

“We’re sad to see it go,” said Therese McCarthy. “We did everything that we could to make it work.”

Therese McCarthy and her husband, Daniel McCarthy, bought the shares of Faces owned by her uncle Camile Hannoush and her aunt Tiffany Hannoush in 2016.

McCarthy said she and her husband have a lot of experience in retail, but they were affected by the same problems that the previous owners had dealt with as well, and characterized the closing as “inevitable.”

“We couldn’t combat the decline in foot traffic, unfortunately,” she said.

McCarthy said there was a significant decline in foot traffic in 2018. She also cited rising costs as another problem the business had faced.

The McCarthys co-owned Faces with Amy and Chris Pariseau. Efforts to contact the Pariseaus have been unsuccessful this week.

McCarthy said an agreement about the timeline for leaving the space was not able to be reached with their landlord.

“We had to do it a little quicker than we had hoped,” she said.

McCarthy said employees had been given their final pay.

Faces first opened as Faces of Earth in 1971 in Amherst by Steve Vogel. The Northampton Faces location was opened in 1986 and continued on after the Amherst Faces closed in 1991.

In 2015 Peter Vogel, who took over the business from his father in 2009, said Faces would close if it didn’t find a buyer. That buyer was a group consisting of Camile and Tiffany Hannoush, of Hannoush Jewelers, and Amy and Chris Pariseau.

The 175 Main St. building that formerly housed Faces has stayed under Vogel family ownership. In a comment sent via email, Steve Vogel said that the space is for rent through Colebrook Realty.

Colebrook also lists the building as for sale for $5 million although the listing says that it still has space leased to Faces.

McCarthy said she and her husband have no plans for Faces in the future.
