DEERFIELD — A woman was transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield on Friday after crashing the SUV she was driving into a house on Routes 5 and 10.

According to Deerfield Police Sgt. Jennifer Bartak, witnesses said the driver of the Honda Element, which was traveling northbound, left the roadway and crashed into the side of the house at 401 Greenfield Road. Nobody was home when police responded at around 4 p.m.

After an initial assessment of the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, the helicopter that had been requested for medical transport was canceled, Bartak said.

The age and residency of the driver were not released. The vehicle had Massachusetts license plates.

The property is owned by Paul Chapley, who owns the neighboring Chapley Gardens.

“There was more damage to my garden center,” he said, acknowledging the path the driver took after leaving the roadway. There was likely damage to the foundation of the house, he added.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. The Deerfield Fire Department, South County EMS and an AMR ambulance also responded to the scene.
