Choosing the sports section to publish a proposal by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to cut Special Olympics funding was a sad commentary for education and individuals with special needs.

While the Special Olympics are certainly a sport-related event, this attempt to strip funds is really about dismissing those individuals and is really an affront on special education.

The pride and learned skills that individuals with special needs inherit from these games are tantamount to their living a full life. That is a human interest and not a sporting interest. This story should have been given a more prominent place just as any story concerning government issues.

Everyone needs to be aware of the current administrations attempt to diminish long-established human services that have been in place for decades. Placing it on the sports pages reduces the number of people that may see it since they do not give a whit about sports news.
