NORTHAMPTON — The state is investigating a recent complaint made against a local day care in which two toddlers left the facility on their own and were safely found by a passerby.

Police received a call on Aug. 28 from someone who reported seeing two toddlers alone on the street, though police said they were not able to give the specific location where the children were found.

The caller returned the two toddlers back to the day care, Little Schoolhouse Family Daycare on Ormond Drive in Florence, according to police. When a police officer arrived at the day care, the children had been safely returned. The day care did not respond to requests for comment about the incident.

On the same day the toddlers were found, the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care — the agency that licenses day care facilities — received a report of alleged neglect of two children at Little Schoolhouse Family Daycare and said it is investigating the incident.

The state agency was unable to provide more details on the allegations, citing its ongoing investigation. Little Schoolhouse confirmed to the Department of Early Education and Care that the staff member named in the neglect allegation will not be allowed to care for children at the day care while the state is investigating the case.
