The United Nations reported that global emissions must be reduced by 55% within 10 years to avoid the worst effects of climate change. According to a coauthor of the report, if we don’t do something by next year, we won’t have a livable future.

We need drastic action now. The Green New Deal is one solution. It is a congressional resolution that lays out a framework for making the U.S. carbon neutral by 2030, while also creating new high-paying jobs. As a result of collaboration among activists ready to spark change, millions of young people around the world are rising up once again for another series of global strikes.

Last Friday, youth and their adult allies joined the global revolution by participating in the Climate Strike in Springfield. People from all over western Massachusetts gathered for a rally at Springfield City Hall, with youth from Rep. Richard Neal’s district passionately speaking out for a common goal of climate justice.

Following the rally, there was a march to the courthouse and a sit-in to pressure Neal, the only Massachusetts congressman who hasn’t endorsed the GND, to sign the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge and to endorse the GND. The strike was organized almost entirely by young people in local Sunrise hubs.

The Sunrise Movement is a youth-led political movement aiming to build an army of young people to stop climate change and inequality, as well as create millions of good jobs in the process.
