AMHERST — As people begin taking down and removing Christmas trees from their homes, an Amherst farm is accepting donations of the evergreens to feed a herd of goats.

Trees, devoid of tinsel, ornaments and other decorations, can be dropped in the yard at 326 West Pomeroy Lane, near the Hadley town line.

Michelle Chandler, who runs the small farm, said she will use the trees to supplement the conventional goat diet of hay and grain. The trees typically provide sustenance into late spring. The herd currently includes five adults, four teenagers and five babies.

Goats can eat all the needles and most of the bark and get vitamin C from the trees.

Chandler will have space for the trees to be placed in front of the home, a drop-off site in place since 2016.

Another local farm taking Christmas trees this year is Whispering Vines Homestead, a small family rabbitry in North Hatfield.

“Tis the season to donate your much loved Christmas tree to some happy goats that would love to have it as their post holiday dessert,” reads a Facebook post from the farm.

The farm is asking people to reach out through social media to learn more about where to bring the trees.
